Vesleskarvet, a nunatak rock outcropping surrounded by a glacial ice sheet, is occupied by the Sanae IV research station. The research station is a base for oceanography, biology, geology and geomorphology.
The research station is raised off the ground to allow wind to blow snow below the station. Non-raised structures are often buried in snowdrifts, causing collapse.
