In 1934 and 1935, the StratoBowl was used to launch record-breaking manned balloon flights into the stratosphere. The StratoBowl’s topography allowed for a windbreak to fill hot air balloons that otherwise would have prematurely blown away with South Dakota’s straight-line winds.
